“When COVID-19 started causing businesses to close their doors and send employees to work from home (if they could), the sources of donated surplus food that provided Keep Austin Fed with ready-to-eat meals was drastically reduced. The surplus prepared meals from caterers that provided many corporate programs with daily meals completely vanished. Restaurants and retailers that have managed to keep their doors open for take-out meals have gone from donating surplus food 3 days a week to only once a week, and even then the volume is low.
The meals provided by Keep Austin Together have allowed us to insure that our partner organizations are still able to get their food insecure clients wholesome, nutritious meals. This not only helps to allay the fears associated with food insecurity, but minimizes unnecessary trips out of their homes, often via public transportation, and keeps these clients less vulnerable to contracting the coronavirus. Thank you for providing these meals and for adding the variety of meals from week to week. It is important that we recognize that just because people face food insecurity doesn’t mean they don’t enjoy a variety of good food.”
